.. .Now in Queensway you can here Russian language more often than anywhere else. Also there is kind of 'meeting point': Russian centre, shop and restaurant. The owner Boris Gofman -professional musician, conductor and composer in the past has became 'an explorer' together with his wife Tatiana.
"In the beginning no one believed in my idea. There wasn't anything like this before. Even the manager of the shopping centre, where we intended to launch the business gave us the smallest place he had because he didn't believe in our success. On just a few square metres we could place only few shelves and small refrigerator. On other hand we never intended to compete with local supermarkets.
My dream was to establish Russian centre where people could make themselves at home as well as socialise on their own language and meet other people from the same part of their country. In shop and restaurant "Kalinka" you can see local resident, Count Andrei Tolstoy and Russian artists that visiting London (even Mstislav Rastropovich and Galina Vishnevskaya were spotted here) as well as our students clubbing together for pack of buckwheat. Very often people are applying for help. And we help them.
We know a lot of our customers by name and know what they do. Also we arrange musical parties for everyone who would like to come. I play saxophone, somebody might bring guitar or violin. English people are often visiting these parties as well".
